ESA Academy — Space Systems Engineering Training Course

Intensive, week-long ESA Academy programme focused on systems engineering for space missions. Combined practitioner lectures with Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) workshops and team-based mission studies covering requirements, system architecture, trade-offs, V&V, risk and project & schedule management. Delivered design reports, integration/test plans and risk registers; achieved top individual evaluation

Context & Objectives

Selected for the ESA Academy Space Systems Engineering Training Course (ESEC-Galaxia). The intensive week-long programme immersed me in systems-level practice for space missions, with the explicit objectives to apply the systems-engineering lifecycle (requirements, architecture, interfaces), perform concurrent design and trade-offs, and develop verification & validation, risk and project management strategies in a mission context.

PROJECT DETAILS

Methodology & Activities

Hands-on, team-based format combining lectures, case studies and Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) workshops. Activities included mission concept development, requirements engineering, system options analysis, schedule and cost planning, risk assessments, and the preparation of LEOP/commissioning and integration/test plans. Work was conducted in international teams, and deliverables were presented and defended.

PROJECT DETAILS

Technical Content & Tools

Covered: systems-engineering processes and standards, requirements & interface engineering, concurrent engineering and trade-off methodologies, verification & validation approaches, project/quality management (WBS, product/specification trees), schedule & cost control, and risk management. Pedagogy blended ESA practitioner lectures with real-world case exercises in a collaborative CDF environment.

PROJECT DETAILS

Deliverables & Contributions

Produced group design reports, integration and test plans, risk registers, critical-path schedules and a consolidated mission design brief. I played an active role in technical discussions, contributed to design decisions and led parts of the team presentations. I achieved a top individual evaluation (28/30), reflecting strong mastery of the taught concepts.

PROJECT DETAILS

Skills Developed

Acquired applied competence in systems engineering for space missions, concurrent design and trade-off analysis, V&V strategy development, and project planning/quality assurance. Strengthened cross-cultural teamwork, technical communication in English and leadership in multidisciplinary settings. This experience validates my commitment to a career in space systems engineering and demonstrates readiness for roles in systems design, integration & test, and mission engineering.
