Innovation in Aerospace Propulsion

During a one-month internship at Turbotech, I contributed to the industrialization of regenerative-cycle turbomachines by supporting assembly, drafting work instructions, and designing a modular transport case. This hands-on experience gave me a concrete view of aerospace production challenges and strengthened both my technical and industrial methods skills.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

Context and Objectives

I completed a one-month internship at Turbotech (Toussus-Le-Noble site) from January 2 to 27, 2023, within the Operations Department. Turbotech designs innovative regenerative-cycle turbomachines for light aviation (turboprop engines) and hybrid-electric architectures (55 kW and 90 kW turbogenerators). The company was in its industrialization phase: transitioning from prototypes to repeatable production was the service’s top priority.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

Assigned Missions

My main role was to assist with the assembly and disassembly of turbomachines in the workshop, with three key responsibilities:

  • Participating in picking and assembly operations according to Manufacturing Orders (OF) and Work Instructions (WI);
  • Drafting and improving Work Instructions to standardize assembly;
  • Designing a modular transport case capable of carrying both the turboprop engine and the turbogenerator.
    These tasks gave me hands-on insight into the supply chain, ERP, quality control, and traceability requirements specific to the aerospace sector.

Technical Elements and Achievements

  • Assembly / Testing: I took part in all assembly steps, from picking operations to bench setup and testing (on the aerodrome test platform). I learned how to use and interpret precision instruments (micrometer, dial indicator) and contributed to balancing operations on test rigs.
  • Work Instructions: I drafted and enhanced WIs in English, including SolidWorks visuals to make procedures usable by entry-level operators — a concrete step toward industrialization.
  • Transport Case: Designed a 3D modular transport case and inserts, and produced 2D plans ready to be sent to a manufacturer. This work included measurements, SolidWorks modeling, and attachment dimensioning.

Figures and Operational Context

  • Internship duration: January 2 to 27, 2023.
  • Company size at the time: ~15 employees (mostly engineers).
  • Supply chain: ~350 references per engine type, ~100 suppliers, with highly variable lead times (3 days to 1 year).
  • Production / market: 2022 = 15 turbomachines produced, 2023 = 30 firm orders, profitability target ≈ 60 turbomachines/year.
    These figures highlighted the critical role of supplier planning and standardized procedures to ensure repeatability in production.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

Skills Acquired

  • Technical: tightening protocols and micrometric tolerancing, balancing on test rigs, use of tools and WIs, SolidWorks modeling.
  • Industrial Methods: drafting work instructions for industrialization, managing Manufacturing Orders/ERP, ensuring traceability and quality control in production.
  • Professional / Soft Skills: cross-department teamwork, technical communication (progress meetings, workshop briefings), autonomy in managing a mini-project (transport case).

Personal Outcome and Perspectives

This workshop immersion gave me a concrete understanding of the technical, organizational, and human requirements of an innovative industrial environment. It was a formative experience that strengthened my technical skills and deepened my interest in projects combining engineering rigor with innovation.
